The Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum) is a species [1] of Mole Salamander [2]. The proper common name is the Eastern Tiger Salamander, as to differentiate from other closely related species.
Eastern tiger salamanders are large, with a typical length of 6-8 inches. They can reach up to 13 inches [3] in length, particularly neotenic [4] individuals. Adults are usually blotched with grey [5], green [6], or black [7], and have large, lidded eyes [8]. They have short snouts, thick necks, sturdy legs, and long tails [9]. Their diet [10] consists largely of small insects [11] and worms [12], though it is not rare for an adult to consume small frogs [13] and baby mice [14].
