Once Upon a Tide: Documentary Review

The documentary Once Upon a Tide is a great children's program that focuses on Ocean Conservation. It was a finalist in the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival (2009) in the category Children's Program.  As UntamedScience has a real focus on conservation we payed close attention to this piece.  Here is the summary from thier website:

About the Film

Working with award-winning filmmakers (Sea Studios Foundation) and animation studio (LAIKA/house) the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School produced a 10-minute film that reconnects its audience to the importance of the marine environment for all life on Earth, including
human life. Unlike conventional natural history documentaries, the film title Once Upon a Tide, is a fictional narrative that blends the moral and visual elements of a fairy tale to inspire us to recognize the importance of ocean conservation. This modern day fable is an innovative educational approach that will be shown in aquariums, museums, theaters and schools nationally and internationally. Film distribution includes educational ‘take-away’ guides for viewers.

Review

Of all the children's pieces at the festival we felt this was the best piece.  Not only would it be great for any age of student, but it was very touching to watch.  The combination of animated pieces and the grandmother-like narrator give this a fairy-tale feel.  It is a much watch film.  For more on the film and to view it, go to the Healthy Oceans Website.
