Lotus Lilies

There are only two "Lotus-Lilies" in the family Nelumbonaceae and both are in the same genus - Nelumbo.  The photo on the right is a typical form of the plants in the Nelumbonaceae (adapted from a Russian source).

Plants in the Family:

  • Nelumbo nucifera - Indian lotus
  • Nelumbo lutea - American lotus

Classification

There is some disagreement as to the placement of the genus Nelumbo.  In the recent past it was placed in the water lily family (Nymphaceae).
