Pumpkins and Squashes are representative species in the genus Cucurbita.  Species in this genera were first cultivated in the New World before being introduced to the rest of the world. There are several species in this genera that are known as pumpkins, including members of C. mixta, C. pepo, C. maxima, and C. moschaa.
