The family Cucurbitaceae is made up of about 960 species of gourds.  Species in this family are often called melons or cucurbits.  Included within this family are pumpkins, watermelons, Zucchinis, cucumbers, etc squash.

Gourds were cultivated in both the Old and New Worlds.  Pumpkins were not grow in Europe however until after Columbus as they were native to the New World.
