Dicotyledons: Class Magnoliopsida

Classification

Kingdom: Plantae
Phylum: Angiosperma
Class: Magnoliopsida

Dicots or Dicotyledons are flowering plants who have seeds that have two embryonic leaves (cotyledons).  Flowering plants that are not dicots are monocots or monocotyledons.

It should be noted here that dicots are not a monophyletic group.  We have placed them in the Class Magnoliopsida in accordance with teh Cronquist system and to help us work them into the existing taxonomy as seen here.  However, it should be noted that the APGII system shows they are not monophyletic.  Most "dicots" are however in a monophyletic group called the eudicots (tricolpates), but some are not.  To make things easy for looking at the resulting orders, we have simply grouped all Dicots in this taxonomic rank.
