There are approximately 130-140 species in the Cupressaceae, or cypress family. It contains many trees of extremes. The Giant Sequoias has the largest tree with a trunk volume of 1486.9 square meters. The Coast Redwoods hold the record for the tallest tree at 115.55m tall. The second stoutest tree (sometimes called the largest tree) is the Montezuma Cypress in Mexico at 11.42 m in diameter. The second oldest tree is the Alerce at 3622 years old (second only to a Great Basin Bristlecone Pine).
The family Cupressaceae is divided into seven subfamilies and thirty genera (based on recent analysis by Farjon 2005).
