The fishes in the order Notacanthiformes live almost entirely in the deep sea. The order is composed of the spiny eels and halosaurs. In the recent past, both spiny eels and halosaurs were placed within the order Albuliformes, the bonefishes. However, they are now placed in their own order. The Notacanthiformes have a more elongated, almost eel-like body than the Albuliformes. For example, the caudal fin (tail fin) is no longer present.

Like their close relatives, the bonefishes, these fish generally feed on benthic creatures. However, because they are somewhat slow moving, they also prey on slower moving or sessile animals.
