Hyrax: Order Hyracoidea

The order Hyracoidea contains four living species of hyrax.  All species live in Africa and Persia. The word hyrax comes from a Greek word meaning "shrewmouse."  

Classification

The four species of hyrax are found in the family Procaviidae.  There are three genera.

  • Dendrohyrax arboreus (Southern Tree Hyrax)
  • Dendrohyrax dorsalis (Western Tree Hyrax)
  • Heterohyrax brucei (Yellow-spotted Rock Hyrax) 
  • Procavia capensis (Rock Hyrax)
