True Seals: Family Phocidae

Classification

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Phocidae

The True Seals or Earless Seals belong to the family Phocidae.  This is but one of three families of Pinnipeds.  The other groups are the fur seals and sea lions.  These True Seals are distinguished in the way they "crawl" around on the beach. This is unlike the sea lions which are able to use their hind flippers almost walk while on shore.
