We have Fish grouped as a category because most people can probably recognize a fish when they see one. But, you might be surprised that fish as a group do not all fit under one taxonomic group. Its true! In systematics they say this means that fish is not a monophyletic group. Let me explain.
Fish you see, are composed of several Classes. These include the Hagfishes, Lampreys, Lobe-finned fish, Ray-finned fish, and the Sharks/Skates/Rays. Problem is that amphibians evolved from lobe-finned fishes, which then lead to reptiles and mammals. We're closer related to lobe-finned fishes than lobe-finned fishes are to lampreys! Thats going to seem weird!
