Untamed Science is a site dedicated to making inspirational videos, and content for the sciences. We have produced videos for biology, physics, chemistry, earth science and technology. We're also creating a series of portals (as seen on the upper right of every page), that serve as guides for students and aids for teachers. Watch the following video to get an idea about how we're trying to show science. If you agree with our ideology, join us by becoming a member of the site.
If you're still confused, let's explain this collection of portals. In the upper right-hand side of the page, there are round icons that lead to 5 different portals. Each one contains a working resource for science-geeks. It is all made possible via our team of scientists, graduate students, teachers, and econuts that have decided to unite forces to help educate the world about our changing planet. We like to collectively call this team the ecogeeks, and we're trying to get every educator and eco-student on the team. If you'd like to help us, become an ecogeek and then send us an email via our contact pages. We'd love to hear from you.
As part of an ongoing project, we're trying to produce video that compliments every major biological topic taught in science classes today. If you're a biology teacher this is a great place for you to go in order to start looking for science content. We're just getting started though, so if you want to help write content, we'd love your help.
Our biodiversity portal serves as the beginning to a working tree of life thats simply a fun place to learn about the plants, animals, fungi, and microbes that live on our planet. Experts are writing articles that aren't full of science jargon. We're writing it so its interesting to read for those that love learning about the species as much as we do.
Not only are we trying to share videos with you, but we want you to have the knowledge and power to learn how to make films about our environment. To do that we've compiled an in-depth filmmaking guide to explain everything you need to get started telling great stories. HOW TO FILMMAKING GUIDE
If you're a teacher, we want to help you help others. Upload your favorite lesson plans and we'll help categorize them so that other teachers can benefit from your hard work. We hope that you'll be able to utilize this resource in ways that make your teaching more effective and ultimately inspire our youth in ways we never thought possible.
So
what is Untamed Science? Every time we visit a new zoo or interview a scientist in the field, we get this question. Simply, we're a group of scientists and filmmakers that have united with one simple goal - communicate science in a fun way to the next generation.
Ten years ago now, I taught my first undergraduate biology lab course at the University of Hawaii. I was getting my PhD studying coral reef fish and part of my duties included teaching biology to kids fresh out of high school. I learned quickly I had a long way to go to become an amazing teacher. One of my tools was to bring in short videos into the classroom. I found that kids loved it even more when I brought in home-made videos. That realization was the beginning of a second career for me - becoming a filmmaker to help become a better teacher.
Here at Untamed Science we're a blend of scientists from different backgrounds that share the idea that by using filmmaking, we can become better science communicators. Video is our tool here. We try to provide only the best and most exciting videos for those that find us on the web. We encourage everyone to sign up as an ecogeek to get our species emails, and to subscribe to our podcasts. We've been busy in 2011, and I'm sure we'll be even busier in 2012. If you have an idea for an amazing story that you think we should cover, let us know! Or, if you'd like to help join the team, let us know you exist by sending us an email through our contact page.
